c. 2018 - fluorescent enamel screen prints on salvaged window pane, plexi paneling, stainless steel cable, aluminum and steel fasteners - 84 x 84 x 60 inches - video and music by Jesse Hale

CMYK Chandelier

This temporary installation was created for MOCAN in 2018 as an extension of my series, Walls & Ceilings. The piece is made up of 6 reclaimed window panes collected from a renovation of my old apartment complex back in 2015. Halftone images of six drawings from the original series were screen-printed on the panes using fluorescent enamel ink—cyan, magenta, and yellow. The drawings were first transferred to 18 x 18 inch halftone negatives on orthographic film using an obsolete print-reproduction method involving a large makeshift camera, and a 5-stage darkroom process. The negatives were burned onto silkscreens which were then used to print the images on glass. The glass panes are suspended from a floating ceiling of white plexi panels. While fluorescent pigment is prone to fade in ultraviolet light, the work is illuminated with black-light bulbs, causing it to glow more vividly.

My cumbersome, yet functional, replica of the world’s first photocopier—the process camera. Features a 610mm APO Nikor Nikon Lens with an average exposure time of 90 seconds. More on the history of halftone reproduction here.

Views from the darkroom. Five stage chemical process for developing each 18 x 18 inch halftone negative in our spare bedroom.

18 x 18 inch halftone negatives hanging to dry in our shower. More on the history of halftone reproduction here.
